Before Starting Up (Part 2)
Thursday, December 10, 2009 Posted by Gagan Singh at 11:33 AM 0 commentsImagine, you have started pursuing but its taking time and you don't have enough money to survive further or your parents can't take care of themselves or something like this. What'd you do then.
Before jumping into the startup wagon (in excitement), take a pause and see if your life is stabilized enough. Take a notice of these points: Check your bank balance (this will help you before actual money start coming in), Check your family responsibilities - hold or complete (you can't ignore your responsibilities towards your family). May be your family need you at the same time.
Solve a Real Problem
Make sure you are solving a real problem. Identify the problem and try to solve it. The Problem must be obvious. It should be easy to understand.
Networking, Networking and Networking
Yes, you know. Networking is very useful tool. Get feedback, share ideas, hire talent, create buzz and lots of other stuff you can do while networking.
Build Your Credibility
People believe in you only if you have done something noticeable whether its academic or professional.
Don't Be Afraid
Don't afraid of sharing your ideas with others because if you don't share you can't get feedback. if you don't get feedback it won't be possible for you to improve your idea as customers/users demand.
Get a Mentor
Having a mentor is making less mistakes. A mentor can keep you on track, in right direction. But choose your mentor carefully.
Execute
Now finally "EXECUTE YOUR PLANS."
Before Starting Up (Part 1)
Wednesday, September 30, 2009 Posted by Gagan Singh at 1:34 PM 1 commentsNothing is Impossible
First of all, let me share the most important point which I learned during my journey of 9 yrs....so far. Believe in 'NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE'. When you believe, you can achieve unachievable things. The mindset lets you think and try for the things which others can only think. I believe this is the first thing you should set in your mind.
Know the Motive
You need to know: Why you want to start your business? Are you just doing because your friends are doing or Just for the money or You think its exciting or Its really solving a problem. This will set your mind in the right direction.
Know Your Self
Before jumping into the startup wagon, know your self. Yeah...I know, you'd say "I know myself" "I can do this". Thats good but what I mean is, Know about your responsibilities ( this can distract you ), your bank balance ( its needed during starting up ), Do you have risk taking abilities? Can you enjoy the stress, keep your self motivated and handle your achievements.
Put Some Gap
Now if you have decided that you'd start your own business......Hold It. Don't start preparations for the business. Yes.....Hold your decision for at least 1 month. During that period keep your self away from business activities. That is to check, if there is still burning desire after one month, do you still want to start your company, if yes, go forward with full confidence and focused. If you are doubtful, my dear check your decision again.
More in the next post.

BlindSearch - Who is better Google, Bing or Yahoo
Thursday, September 3, 2009 Posted by Gagan Singh at 12:38 PM 1 commentsMichael Kordahi, an employee at Microsoft, opened up his project for the public. It allows users to search in Google, Bing and Yahoo from only one box and see which one is better...not aggregating but it is showing the results in an interesting way.
When a user searches, results come up in 3 sections and every section has a button on its top to VOTE. You are not told which results are from which site. After clicking the button you get to know which results are from Google, Yahoo or bing.
The results surprise you as they are not from Google most of the time.
After 8 weeks of the launching, Michael Kordahi opened some stats:
Query count: 559,239
Results: Google: 41%, Bing: 31%, Yahoo: 28%
These facts show that there is no big difference between all these search engines.
So what does that mean, Can we believe the results or Michael has done a great job.
According to Michael Kordahi "I work for Microsoft. This site is not affiliated with my employer, it is not a Microsoft initiative, it's simply me having fun in my spare time."
Let me know what you believe.
A Reality Check on Google Size
Monday, August 10, 2009 Posted by Gagan Singh at 7:11 PM 1 commentsRecently I came across an article on NY Times explaining Google’s efforts to explain its place in the market in the face of increasing anti-trust scrutiny.
Some weeks ago, Google held a meeting with reporters and media persons where Google was trying to explain that how the company should be viewed. Explaining the company is not bad.
Google is a big company now as we all know, but Google’s concern is that it is not that big if it is it is not bad. To clarify this statement, Google showed some interesting facts. In the table below, it clearly shows that Google is not a BIG company….…But Google is a big company.
This table clearly shows Google is far away from these giants. Except Market Cap, Google is at last position….according to the table.
So what’s wrong in this data?
The missing point is COMPANIES’ FOUNDING DATE.
Now, have a look at another table…..
* AT&T was formed (Source )
** Verizon founded (On Jan 1, 1984 AT&T divested itself of 22 local operating companies, Thus Bell Atlantic was free of AT&T. Verizon Communications was formed in 2000 when Bell Atlantic, one of the Regional Bell Operating Companies, merged with GTE. Prior to its transformation into Verizon, Bell Atlantic had merged with another Regional Bell Operating Company in 1997. So Verizon was not founded in 2000. Its roots are coming from AT&T.)
Google didn't mention about the founding dates of companies. and that makes the difference.
If Google had founded in 1975 (Microsoft founded ) Revenues would be around $ 71 B, more than Microsoft. Compare with other companies in the table and you get the point.
Now we can imagine how big is Google.
